The Samoa Dunes Park is a favorite with the local ATV crowd.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gerryfilby.com\/hangarlife\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/l_2048_1536_758E740D-91C0-47AF-86DD-904B81EA9B42.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gerryfilby.com\/hangarlife\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/l_2048_1536_758E740D-91C0-47AF-86DD-904B81EA9B42.jpeg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gerryfilby.com\/hangarlife\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/l_2048_1536_D3B0614D-C17B-4A0E-9F8C-EF235D882FB2.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gerryfilby.com\/hangarlife\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/l_2048_1536_D3B0614D-C17B-4A0E-9F8C-EF235D882FB2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m guessing the airport dates back to the WWII just after Pearl Harbor when the fear of a Japanese invasion was at its height.\u00a0 According to the local park signage, Japanese submarines would show up once in a while and take pot-shots at local shipping.\u00a0 Balloons and flying boats would be dispatched to drop bombs on them and the locals would comb the beaches for washed up Japanese &#8220;memorabilia&#8221;.\u00a0 The concrete ammunition bunkers are still to be seen along the dunes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gerryfilby.com\/hangarlife\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/l_2048_1536_E80F1A1B-FAEB-4252-BCD7-0E2867E55070.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gerryfilby.com\/hangarlife\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/l_2048_1536_E80F1A1B-FAEB-4252-BCD7-0E2867E55070.jpeg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Oregon coastline has a quite different character to California&#8217;s &#8211; somehow more blasted and bleak.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stopped by Eureka Muni just because I could.
